Sinking Your Teeth Into Braces- 7 Teeth Moving Facts To Chew On

I’m here to clear up a common misconception….braces are not only about kids. In fact….braces are not only about braces!

Back in the day, when you brought your  pre-teen to the dentist for their check up, there was a possibility that the dentist would suggest that your child get braces.

And they would end up wearing a mouthful of these uncomfortable bands…

…and resemble this guy.

Fear not….those days are gone!  New orthodontic technology offers you so many more options.

Here are some teeth moving facts for you to chew on:

1.) Dentists monitor the “bite” of even the youngest of patients so that, if there are bites that can be corrected at an early age, the parents are given a referral to a qualified orthodontist.  There are some bite conditions that can be treated as early as 6 years old.

2.) Most orthodontists do not use those teeth covering bands anymore…sometimes, they will still use bands for the four molars that are the farthest back in the mouth.  Otherwise, most use small brackets that are bonded to the tooth and are far less noticeable.

3.) If you talk to your orthodontist, some do provide the option of “clear” brackets so that you hardly see the “braces” at all.  Many adults request this option so that people don’t easily see that they are wearing braces.

4.) Many orthodontists stage their treatment for patients so that changes are made in the bite at the times when those changes would be most effective.  This sometimes lessens the overall orthodontic experience.

5.) Bonded wire retainers on the back of the front teeth (especially the lower teeth) can help to lessen the amount of post orthodontic shifting that may go on.  Check with you orthodontist about how she/he monitors shifting teeth.

6.) Invisalign Technology is an effective method of tooth movement that utilizes custom made clear acrylic trays for specific amounts of time to move the teeth into the desired position.  Invisalign is the perfect solution for many people.  Many adults who never were able to have the necessary orthodontic treatment as children are benefiting from the cosmetically pleasing and orthodontically effective Invisalign System. Invisalign certified dentists and orthodontists can provide you with information about this very successful and easy to use system.  In general, no brackets or bands are used with the Invisalign System.

7.) There is no “one size fits all” treatment plan for tooth movement.  Each case is different and it is very important for the parent or the patient to maintain good communication with the orthodontist or dentist who is providing treatment.

There are many effective options for tooth movement today.  Make sure you talk with you dentist about your orthodontic questions.  We are also more than happy to answer any questions that you may have about orthodontia or about anything dental related.  Family Dental Care Park Ridge is a certified Invisalign provider and we would be happy to answer any of your Invisalign questions as well.
