Laughter is the Best Medicine and Smiles are the Cure

It is felt that laughter plays a very important role in our emotional and physical health. Some of the effects of laughter are obvious.  But what about the more subtle effects.  I am such a fan of laughter that I wrote about it in a guest post over at my friend Al Smith’s blog , The CARE Movement, not too long ago.  If you click here, you can see what I said.  Today, though, I want to share with you some of the subtle and not so subtle effects of laughter.

  • Contagious:  If you are going to spread something my way, please let it be laughter.  The contagious nature of laughter is something that I am pretty sure, most of us want to “catch”.  Sometimes we will join friends in laughter having no idea as to what we are laughing about…the laughter was just that contagious.  Pretty powerful!
  • Tension Reducer:  In those uncomfortably tense situations that we find ourselves in occasionally, finding humor and evoking laughter can really offset the tension.  There is nothing like a little levity to diffuse a sticky situation.
  • Endorphin Release: We know that the level of endorphin release increases with laughter and helps to create positive feelings that can even help in reducing responses to pain.
  • Mood Enhancement: Laughter brings with it an overall sense of well being that works as a natural mood enhancer
  • Immune Response:  Laughter is thought to be able to decrease the stress hormones and concomitantly increase the release of the  good immune cells which can decrease our chances of illness and increase our ability to heal.
  • Increases Sense of Self:  Laughter is a unifier.  It can help you feel more relaxed socially and more able to be yourself.  It’s inherent tension reducing capability reduces the fear of being judged and allows more freedom of expression.

So, what can you do to increase the presence of laughter in your life?

  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Give yourself a laughter challenge and initiate the laughter yourself.
  • Find activities that make you happy.
  • Try to find the humor in situations.
  • Be mindful of utilizing laughter therapy in your life.
  • Take diligent care of your health.
  • Be proactive in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Keeping Those Plates Spinning

Have you noticed that there has been a lot happening at Family Dental Care Park Ridge?  Me too.  Remember that act on the old Ed Sullivan show where the guy comes out and gets a lot of plates spinning all at once and he is able to keep them spinning?  Well, as a child, I was so intrigued by the intensity of that adrenaline rush to keep those plates spinning and now, as an adult, I think of that ability to spin those plates and keep them spinning as a metaphor for life.  Really, isn’t that what we are doing in our daily journey?  Each of us have plates… the number of plates varies, but we all have plates.  And each of us greet each day by getting our plates spinning.  And sometimes our plates stay balanced and sometimes…well, they don’t.  I have to believe that even when the plates come crashing down around us, it’s not always a bad thing.  Sometimes it’s an opportunity for us to get some new plates and set them spinning.

At Family Dental Care Park Ridge, we have a whole new set of plates spinning.  And the balancing act couldn’t be going more smoothly.  We have two amazing dentists who are compassionate, insightful, intelligent and clinically exceptional…Dr. Carolyn Demas and Dr. Matthew Demas.  They bring with them a level of energy and enthusiasm that is contagious and almost palpable.  Each of you who have met them and shared with me your experience have extolled their praises and thanked me for making sure that they would be taken care of very well.  We have a new front office manager, Vivien Koralik.  If you haven’t had the pleasure of speaking with Vivien, please, if for no other reason than to hear her kindness float over the phone line, give her a call.  Vivien aims to make your experience at Family Dental Care Park Ridge as pleasant and as stress free as possible.  She will answer your questions about our flexible hours, our procedures, our insurance affiliates and even how to get to our office.  In the office working with Dr. Carolyn and Dr. Matt, we have Irene and Margaret.  These wonderful assistants make sure that you are comfortable and help Dr. Carolyn and Dr. Matt with your care.  The synergy and energy that moves through our office is the reason that our plates spin so well.   I would love for you to come experience the synergy yourself.

As always, we are on Facebook at Family Dental Care Park Ridge and more recently at Park Ridge DDS as well as on Twitter @ParkRidgeDDS so please follow us.  We truly love to connect with you, answer your questions or just  talk.
