Laughter is the Best Medicine and Smiles are the Cure

http://youtu.be/c1dkTrNH92Y

It is felt that laughter plays a very important role in our emotional and physical health. Some of the effects of laughter are obvious.  But what about the more subtle effects.  I am such a fan of laughter that I wrote about it in a guest post over at my friend Al Smith’s blog , The CARE Movement, not too long ago.  If you click here, you can see what I said.  Today, though, I want to share with you some of the subtle and not so subtle effects of laughter.

  • Contagious:  If you are going to spread something my way, please let it be laughter.  The contagious nature of laughter is something that I am pretty sure, most of us want to “catch”.  Sometimes we will join friends in laughter having no idea as to what we are laughing about…the laughter was just that contagious.  Pretty powerful!
  • Tension Reducer:  In those uncomfortably tense situations that we find ourselves in occasionally, finding humor and evoking laughter can really offset the tension.  There is nothing like a little levity to diffuse a sticky situation.
  • Endorphin Release: We know that the level of endorphin release increases with laughter and helps to create positive feelings that can even help in reducing responses to pain.
  • Mood Enhancement: Laughter brings with it an overall sense of well being that works as a natural mood enhancer
  • Immune Response:  Laughter is thought to be able to decrease the stress hormones and concomitantly increase the release of the  good immune cells which can decrease our chances of illness and increase our ability to heal.
  • Increases Sense of Self:  Laughter is a unifier.  It can help you feel more relaxed socially and more able to be yourself.  It’s inherent tension reducing capability reduces the fear of being judged and allows more freedom of expression.

So, what can you do to increase the presence of laughter in your life?

  • Surround yourself with positive people.
  • Give yourself a laughter challenge and initiate the laughter yourself.
  • Find activities that make you happy.
  • Try to find the humor in situations.
  • Be mindful of utilizing laughter therapy in your life.
  • Take diligent care of your health.
  • Be proactive in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

I’m on the Edge of…Understanding the Power of Expertise

We are well into our third week of sprucing up our new office space.  There have been lots of changes since our last video and lots of meetings.  Meetings with people who are integral to the success of the outcome of our new space.  Meetings with people who bring intelligent and thoughtful design to our space.  Meetings with people that have a particular expertise.

Expertise is something we don’t think about a lot until we need it…no…demand it…in our life for one reason or another.  In a project that involves talent that I do not possess, I have become reliant on the expertise of people that do offer that talent.  I am dependent on their honesty, integrity, intelligence and perspective as it relates to their particular field of expertise.  Word of mouth has taken on new importance as I am guided from one person with expertise to another person with expertise until I find that sweet spot…that perfect combination of  creative talent with the valuable expertise that they offer who can work together to create my TA-DA moment in January.

And expertise is something that we should expect in our healthcare as well.  You should expect a level of expertise in your experience with your dentist and with your physician.  And when they feel that you would benefit from the expertise of another specialist, your dentist or physician should feel comfortable and assured that the expertise of the specialists that they recommend is reliable, intelligent and ethical.

So, in today’s Word of Mouth Wednesday video, we talk about how important that expertise is to us whether we are painting an office or seeking advice for a dental problem.  We depend on the expertise of others as a valuable and reliable asset. Check out the quick tour of the new office at the end of the video with thanks to Lady Gaga for the energy that I’m on the Edge of Glory provides for our project!

How do you view expertise?  Do you seek the expertise of others when taking care of your health?  Your car?  Your home?

And remember, as always…we LOVE making you smile!

Harry Potter Eat Your Heart Out – 5 Ways Dental Wizardry Can Help Dazzle Your Smile

It’s finally out…the last in an amazing series of Harry Potter movies…Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.  J.K. Rowling has inspired creative imagery in young and old readers for the past 14 years in her seven Harry Potter books.  Wizardry, magic and fantasy sparkled throughout every page of this compelling series.  So, why can’t we step outside of our conventional boxes for just a minute and see how a little wizardry and magic can help you to create a more dazzling smile.  Get out those magic wands and prepare for some amazing results.

1.)Toothbrush - I know you were hoping for something far more fanciful than the old toothbrush and toothpaste routine but, let’s face it…if your teeth aren’t clean, they are definitely not going to be dazzling.

2.) Toothpaste – Now here’s where a little magic can begin to happen.  Try using a “whitening” toothpaste that will help to remove superficial stains.  If you brush with a whitening toothpaste twice a day, not only are your teeth going to be clean and sparkly, they are going to start looking less dingy.  Magic!

3.) Floss – I know, I know.  Will I ever stop nagging about floss?  Probably not.  But, here’s the thing…if you are brushing your teeth twice a day and getting them all clean and healthy looking, would you want your gums to look puffy, irritated and red around those pearly whites?  I think not.  Getting those gums healthy is as important in achieving that dazzling smile as getting your teeth whiter.  Trust me.

4.) Whiten – Now the real magic begins.  Here’s where it is important to talk to your dentist about their recommendations for whitening based on your specific needs.  Your magical smile might be achieved by something as simple as whitening strips or you may benefit more from the magic of bleaching trays.  You and your dentist can put together a spell that will create spectacular results.

5.) Rinses – Kind of like a magic potion, mouth rinses with whitening enhancing ingredients can put the finishing touch on your dazzling smile.  With properly brushed and flossed teeth and healthy gums, the wizardry of whitening and whitening rinses is simply magical.

Abracadabra….in five easy steps, you are on your way to a dazzling, Lord Voldemort-stopping smile.

We can help you to create a magical and dazzling smile.  Dr. Carolyn Demas and Dr. Matt Demas are absolute wizards when it comes to creating spectacular smiles. Call our office for information (847-692-6800) or email us and we would be happy to help.

Park Ridge DDS Whitening and Brightening Your Sexy Smile

The weeks just seem to fly by so quickly lately and here it is Word of Mouth Wednesday again.  Last week’s video blog challenged you to share your definition of a sexy smile and the responses were great.  There was a definite common thread among the various definitions…it seems that most people think that white teeth help to create a sexy smile.  So, it seemed intuitive to me that a good follow up to last week’s video would be to talk about whitening your teeth.

In this video, I will be discussing the various options that you have when it comes to whitening your teeth…from toothpaste with whitening capabilities all the way to power bleaching at the dentist’s office.  There is a great deal of flexibility in whitening your teeth and each of us has different needs and expectations of the outcome so, the best thing to do is to talk with your dentist about the product that will work best for you.  At Family Dental Care Park Ridge, we sit down with the patient who is interested in bleaching to help them determine the best option for their needs.  The products that we use in the office are safe, effective and easy to use.  At the end of this video, if you have any questions regarding bleaching or want to give it a try (it’s really fun and the results are awesome), please give our office a call at 847-692-6800 and we would be happy to help you.  We absolutely LOVE helping people obtain whiter teeth for that sexy smile.
